Summer Bubbles

There’s just something about hearing that cork pop.

Now imagine you’re in a clothing store, surrounded by tropical colors and music and laughter and every 20 minutes or so you hear that tell-tale sound of another bottle of champagne being opened.

This was the scene last week at Lilly Pulitzer’s flagship store.

My daughter, in town for a visit, was tucked behind a fuchsia curtain trying on bathing suits while I patiently waited on a vibrantly patterned bench, sipping my mimosa, reveling in what can only be described as the celebration that is shopping in this free spirited, iconic boutique.

And you know what was so awesome? I was watching women, some MUCH older than me .. women of all shapes and sizes..boldly rocking brightly printed dresses, short shorts, low hanging earrings, off the shoulder tops and high, swinging pony tails. I was awestruck at their breezy confidence, joyful exuberance and esprit de corps.

These women were fully absorbed in the experience they were sharing with each other..as was my daughter who is still recovering from her second orthopedic surgery in 6 months. She and I and everyone else were completely untethered from the tedium of daily life; floating in our own bubbles yet undeniably bobbing around in the same pool of sparkling magic.

You know you’re in the “zone” when “that color looks great on you” and “wow, you look amazing!” pops out of your mouth as complete strangers step out of their changing rooms to see themselves in the larger mirror. When you are at Lilly, you are in the show..and you, my dear, have a speaking part.

Yes, this is one of the changing rooms 🌺

BTW- I didn’t buy a thing that day. You read that right, my five senses senses were entertained, my spirit was lifted and it didn’t cost me a dime. Which brings me back to the focus of this post which is creating your best summer.

If you look inside my closet, I’m pretty sure you will only find one dress by Lilly Pulitzer, but that day with my daughter I allowed myself to be swept into someone else’s passion and it was an absolute blast. Believe it or not, I did basically the same thing when I went to a NASCAR race in Charlotte to appease my husband a few years back. I left my attitude and judgements at the door, immersed myself in the moment and was richly rewarded for it.

This is the summer to drop the preconceptions, open up, let go, be brave and allow yourself to dive into deep water and discover where the current takes you. Seek out opportunities to let your five senses come out to play and if you can’t find any options, create them.

Remember the sentence that started with “when this is over, I’m gonna…” ?

Well, this is your chance to finish that thought.

  • It is totally worth noting that Lilly originally created her bright and busy dresses to hide the stains she would get on her clothes from squeezing the fruit she sold at her juice stand on Palm Beach Island.. 🍋 ..I ask you, who doesn’t want to share in the legacy of that story?
