Breaking up is hard to do

This is not going to be painless or cheap, but I am breaking up with Amazon.

Everything was going smoothly until I started reading articles about how they treat the businesses they do business with; demanding proprietary information, freezing seller’s accounts until they cooperate, copying their products or simply undercutting them with their own brand. The same mom and pop stores that were benefitting from using Amazon’s platform are now in constant danger of being crushed by their host if they do too well. More recently, the company has refused to offer books by select authors who don’t conform to Jeff Bezos’ personal worldview.

I began to feel like every order I placed was a tacit vote of approval for the increasingly menacing tactics of this super-mega-corporation and its despotic CEO.

And so that’s how I wound up in a local bike store yesterday, trying on a pair of over-priced shorts I had picked out from a pitiful selection… in a bathroom that doubled as a dressing room.

No one said this would be easy.. 😂

Thank be thought about breaking up with Amazon too. To your thoughts, I also add the rudeness of an Amazon go employee when I needed to return something and the constant emails asking for reviews

Just be ready..it’s like any other addiction..easier to quit in theory than in practice. I am in withdrawal period for sure. I still look up items on Amazon to see reviews and then shop somewhere else for the stuff..there are options..it’s just I’ve become so used to the ease of one stop shopping.

My problem is that the stores around here are no longer carrying some basic items…like tennis balls

I hear ya.. but maybe order off of Dicks Sporting Goods..or Walmart. I’ve been ordering more off of Walmart lately, been very happy with the service. Not a perfect company either..but not involved in the issues Amazon is..

Things are opening up more here. Hoping that I can rely much less on Amazon and more on local stores

I’m going to try to explain the very confusing situation. Much of the retail sales in nyc are done by tourists and people who commute in for work. With those groups largely non existent, some store have not reopened as yet (if they do is any bodies guess) the stores that are open are carrying high margin items, which means little things like tennis balls are difficult to find. If/when people return to shopping in the city, things will go back…

Makes sense.. I can only imagine things are a lot different in such a big city, esp if you don’t have a car.

  2. I want to break up with Amazon too! I wish there was an alternative. For the most part, I avoid Amazon quite well. But occasionally, I need something so specific that it’s hard to find by myself locally, and I do give in and buy from Amazon begrudgingly. I’d love a decent alternative I can go to in those cases.

So believe it or not, Bed Bath and Beyond has proven to be a real champion-site for me.. Every so often a 20% coupon pops up and I get great deals. Latest purchases include shampoo, lamp shade and new sonic toothbrush.. free shipping, great prices.. who knew?
