I was so looking forward to watching two movies this Christmas: SOUL and Wonder Woman. Both were frustrating disappointments..frustrating, because they had the ingredients to be great, but just couldn’t seem to piece them together.
Wonder Woman was a real slog, I even saw my husband dozing off a few times. Chris Pine’s eyes are still tide pools of alluring, Caribbean-blue magic, but you couldn’t help get the feeling he showed up for this film purely because of contractural obligations. This movie had so many opportunities to show depth and originality, but passed on them all..and the ending was a real eyeball roller.
And then there’s SOUL.
Having just sat through Wonder Woman and regretting the time we wasted on it, we made a deal that if SOUL didn’t “get good” in the first ten minutes, we’d bail..
It was real close.
Soul’s animation is a feast for the eyes, but the story gets hopelessly tangled. Many of the long, drawn out scenes from the afterlife are distracting and simply unnecessary. There’s a moral to this film, but sadly even that isn’t made convincingly clear..tangents are everywhere and the viewer keeps being pulled into them. Again, just like with Wonder Woman, the ingredients are all there, but they just couldn’t seem to put them together in a way that produced a coherent movie.
