Missing Turkey

November 26, 2020- No kids, no mom, no extended family – just me and my husband.

For Thanksgiving yesterday, I made a stuffed eggplant instead of turkey. (We are trying not to eat meat.) Everything else on the menu was pretty much the same as it usually is when I “do” the meal: stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables and one forgotten component.. (I always forget something, last time it was the rolls, (that was a biggie) this year it was cranberry sauce.)

So the eggplant was pretty bland tasting, kinda like turkey. It was pale like turkey, basted like turkey, roasted like turkey; it actually looked a bit like turkey..

It was OK,

it was close,

but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the most important part of the meal was missing.

Conclusion:

There simply is no satisfying substitute for turkey, or your family, on Thanksgiving.

  1. Hugs and more hugs! We celebrated Thanksgiving last month here in Canada. It was very different. No big family dinner. I made dinner and then made up take away plates for my kids. They dropped by to pick them up (Yes, we were all wearing masks and yes we kept the proscribed distance between us.) I was grateful for the brief visits, but it was definitely not the same and I cooked chicken instead of turkey. Sigh. Next year will be better. Yes it will.
