It seems like an eternity ago that Iowa had their messed up caucus..remember? Some group of geniuses devised a new fangled way to count votes and shazaam, the whole thing blew up into a hailstorm of unmanageable data and an embarrassing PR disaster.
I thought about that last night as I tried to comb through the tangles of information available online related to Covid-19. Clearly there are geniuses at work.. and while I appreciate that very much, I need simplified, pertinent facts.
I like a good visual that presents data in digestible chunks-like this:
Some graphs (like the next example) require a magnifying glass, a glass of wine and a PHD. They’re pretty alright, nice color choices and all, they might even look good framed above the sofa, but I just can’t translate this kind of art into information that enlightens. Plus this whole complex, layered look gives me flashbacks to micro and macro economics..AHHH!
Other offerings, like the following blob map, are so simplistic they are pretty much useless. They are cool I guess- if you’re into monochromaticism and love dots (which I do, esp white dots on black dresses), but all in all really a waste of red at this point…I mean what can you say about the picture below other than..”It’s bad, WE GET IT.”
But then again..to be fair..
even the blob map can help you reach some conclusions..like who may be fibbing – just a wee bit.
I just need a tri-focal friendly site for people like me..
not a genius,
not an idiot,
(possibly a touch of ADD..)
curious about the basics..
no dramatic anecdotes,
just day-to-day data
in bite-sized morsels
so I don’t get a stomach ache.
