PLEASE-STAY-HOME

I was heartbroken to see a full parking lot yesterday afternoon at a Catholic church down the street. We live in Florida.. our population’s average age probably matches that of Italy where the death rate from Corona is heart-wrenchingly high. Many churches are 100% online at this point- there’s absolutely NO excuse for endangering people like this.

My 88 year old mom is staying in her home with no more trips outside and no visitors inside- we talk at her front door. She has set up a card table and a chair for visitors on the front porch and she stays inside behind the screen.

For the sake of the elderly, PLEASE STAY HOME AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

I have 4 people in my immediate family who work in hospitals; one in administration, the other three are treating patients. Elective procedures are being cancelled in an effort to keep both patients and healthcare workers disease free for as long as possible. My son told me last night he fully anticipates becoming sick at some point..my daughter told me the same last week. I think they wanted to just lay it out there so it wouldn’t come as a shock.

It’s all about numbers.

For the sake of my kids and so many others serving YOUR community, PLEASE STAY HOME AS MUCH AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

Events are being cancelled, but at a slow pace. (A neighbor down the street hosted a huge party last night..) My husband and I were going to have friends over for a wine tasting next Saturday. When I cancelled, every single invitee was relieved.  People are waiting for others to make these decisions..make the right call!

For the sake of your friends, tell them to PLEASE STAY HOME AS MUCH AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

As Americans we sometimes feel we are different, braver and stronger. My mother’s neighbor, a gruff, cancer beating, former New Yorker in her late 70s, told my mom “I will NOT live in fear!” Translated that means, I will continue to live my life the way I want.. Damn the torpedos!! When it’s my time to go, it’s my time to go!

It’s a widely shared American ethos.

The problem with this BRAVADO is that unlike “going down” with your home when you choose not to evacuate before a hurricane, in this instance your “bravery” will have consequences far beyond your seat at the movie theater, restaurant, in church or on that plane.

Think of your family,

your friends,

your neighbors,

your co-workers..

my kids..

other people’s kids..

those whose immune systems are already compromised.

How would you feel if YOUR actions very negatively impacted their heath?

For the sake of your community and your country..

I know it sounds dramatic..but

PLEASE STAY HOME.
