One of my favorite stories of all time is the Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Anderson. In this classic 1837 tale, swindlers pretend to make the Emperor an expensive new outfit out of cloth that only smart people can see. Needless to say there is no cloth, but no one wants to tell his royal highness because they are afraid of how it will make them look- in this case, stupid! The emperor himself pretends he can see the cloth and the charade continues until he parades through the village and an innocent child points his finger and calls out “Whoa!! That man has no clothes on!”
I was reminded of this story once again as I read today’s “news” about a woman flying from Michigan to California with her service pony. She obviously alerted the press to her flight so there would be maximum attention and coverage.
I keep waiting for someone watching this service animal parade to finally point a finger and say “Whoa!! ” But again, like in the story, everyone’s afraid of how it would make them look.
