Just because the shoe fits, should you keep wearing it?

Everything hurt.

I had just gotten back to the house after a long walk with our dog. My legs felt tired, my feet were sore and my back ached. I examined my rubber flip flops and sure enough, I had worn them down at a severe angle. I am completely flat footed and eventually all of my soles “melt away” on the inside as I pronate so excessively.

I grudgingly drove to the mall and bought a pair of Vionics which have a pretty “hard” arch built in to all of their shoes. They actually felt terrible compared to my well worn old sandals which had conformed so beautifully to my problem feet.

I had to laugh because isn’t that the way life is sometimes?

Like comfortable flip flops, we can create a life that perfectly conforms to all of our problem areas. Bad habits become customized accessories that fit seamlessly into our routines and accommodate our most self defeating tendencies.

It’s hard to leave that comfort behind.

New, healthy behaviors, like new shoes with built in arches, take some time to feel right. It may be hard at first and you’ll want to go back to all those familiar, feel-good ways..  but you’ll be happy you stuck it out and soon you’ll reap the rewards.

Eventually you’ll forget all about the old flops.
