“Keep an eye on it.”

Ugh-I hate that phrase…especially when it’s a doctor saying those words.

“Keep an eye on it”..really? What if I don’t wanna??

Remember ‘gift shop’ visits to the doctor years ago? You went in, got your good report all wrapped up in a pretty box with a big, fat bow on top and skipped out the door.

These days the visits are like mini-seminars that come with homework, shopping lists and an appointment to return, you know.. so “we can keep an eye on it.”

“Keep an eye on it..” what a dumb thing to say..no one has a spare eye to commit to that task, you might as well say keep your foot on it.  Why not tell us what you really mean?

“So Mrs. Nesbit here’s the deal..that spot on your eye/back/tooth/head could be nothing, but I want you to go home and worry about it until I see you again in 6 months, OK? You’re welcome dear, my pleasure!”

That, my friends, is what “keep an eye on it” really means, and here’s what I’m learning to do. Like a big container of leftovers, I put it in the garage fridge and within hours totally forget that it’s there.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m super compliant and follow all instructions, but if I store that mental chunk of Tiramisu front and center in my main fridge, I’ll keep going in for little nibbles all day, every day and that’s not healthy for me.  And isn’t good health the whole point?

So yes, I’ll do what I’m told, but no..I won’t keep my eye (or my mind) on it.
