Finding new spots for old things..

The last few weeks at our home have quite literally felt like a game of musical chairs, and tables, and lights and shelves… I keep moving things around, desperately searching for new spots to place old things.

I must have put ten miles on a set of rattan chairs yesterday sliding them from room to room.. trying in vain to figure out where I could use them.  I even put them out on the porch but the sun just highlighted scratches and cracks that I didn’t even know were there.  Reluctantly, I finally put them into my car and took them to Goodwill.

I love our house, but the layout has always been a challenge. When we first moved here from Pennsylvania over ten years ago, I put my huge farm house table (seating for up to 12) into what is meant to be the living room..it was the only place that monstrosity would fit. The dining room became a reading nook and a place for our piano to sit unplayed.

Now that the piano is gone, these two rooms are going to be used in the manner for which they were originally designed. I took all the leaves out of my table and squeezed it into the dining room.  I’m not thrilled with it, (8 chairs in there is about two too many..) but for now it’s staying as is..

The new sofa and chairs will be delivered today..so we shall see what it all looks like. It’s amazing to me how much stuff we have gotten rid of in the past weeks.  I feel bad about it in a way, but the truth is that solutions, answers and breakthroughs don’t readily appear to me when my life is cluttered..

..and I’m not just talking about the kind of clutter you can pack up and take to Goodwill.

  1. I have the same picture of the sailboat and palm trees that’s in the photo of your dining room!
