Behind that perfect smile..

One minute she was giving birth, within days she was in a coma, the next week she was struggling to remember the past thirteen years. This, in a nutshell, was the dramatic pivot point in Marcy Gregg’s heretofore normal life.  In her presentation at our church last night, Marcy shared her story of how a horrible infection attacked her brain shortly after delivering her daughter. Miraculously she was lifted from the coma she suffered and yet woke up to a mind that was convinced she was still a 17 year old, unmarried girl. Even though Marcy said she instinctually knew her three children were “hers” she did not recognize or know them. Because she and her husband had dated as teens, she remembered who he was..just was shocked that “he was suddenly so old!”

Her journey back to “normalcy” included years struggling with alcohol as she tried to hide the extent of her memory loss and cope with the fall-out. Her desperate desire for things to be normal again became an exhausting game of pretend. Her healing finally came when she surrendered her situation to God and finally started living in truth.

It is hard to imagine that the woman with the perfect smile from Texas on stage last night had travelled through such a terrible nightmare, but she did. Remarkably, she was able to rebuild her life and is a successful artist today.

    • Her situation reminds me so much of the book I read, “What Alice Forgot”.. there are so many layers to consider in a situation like this..like, WHAMO, all of a sudden you have kids.. what if you’re not “feelin’ it?” And speaking of feelin’ it.. you’ve got a man you don’t really know on the other side of your bed telling you he’s been there for ten years.. Can you EVEN imagine?
