Once a week, I take my mom shopping. We go to the mall, the health food store, TJ MAXX… where ever she needs to go. If time permits, which it always does, we stop at Panera’s on the way home and share a Chicken salad sandwich. Every shopping day is different, except for our lunch and one other thing.. As we drive around town, moving in and out of traffic, my mom is always nervously looking out the windows, craning her head every which way to make sure I don’t smash into someone.
One morning, as I was making a right out of her community, she leaned forward and looked to the left to make sure no one was approaching. I brought my car to a full and complete stop.
“Mom,” I said, “what on earth are you doing?”
“I’m making sure no cars are coming, I’m just helping you out” she answered.
“Mom, you are legally blind, remember?” (She has Macular Degeneration)
“Mom, do you trust me?.. because you sure don’t act like you do”
“Yes, you’re a great driver…”
“Do you really trust me?”
“Mom, if you mean that..and really believe it, then relax and let me handle this.”
It’s all so silly and annoying…and yet..I wonder if the good Lord ever looks at me anxiously fretting and obsessing, tampering and controlling..
and wonders “my child, what on earth are you doing?”
“I’m just helping you out Lord” I’d say if He asked
“It’s just habit Lord” I’d have to confess
“Do you trust me Cindy?..because you sure don’t act like you do”
” Cindy, if you mean that..and really believe it, then relax and let me handle this.”
