Bits and Pieces

Last summer, I went for a stroll along a beach in South Carolina. It had stormed like crazy the night before, and leftover grey clouds hung heavy on the horizon. I was on the look-out, as always, for pretty shells to bring back home for my collection. As I walked along the surf, I noticed that all of the shells were broken; every single one. Big ones, little ones, fat ones, thin ones; it didn’t matter. They had all been chewed up and deposited along the shore line. I looked to see if other beach goers were picking anything up…they were not. I returned to the hotel empty handed.

Later on in the day, I decided to go back out again and try to be more open minded about what I considered worthy of collecting. I found busted up oyster shells that looked like chunks of marble, others that felt like tree bark. I found shell pieces fused onto other shell chunks. I found rough and smooth, dark and light, pink, grey and black. I found stripes and holes, sharp edges and smooth, even fossilized chips that simply bore the imprint of shells that had disintegrated long ago. I imagined the journeys they had taken…

Back in my room, I emptied my bag onto the carpet and studied my collection of broken sea-bits. As I brushed the sand off each one (and yes, looked for stray critters) I wondered what God must think when He examines humanity. When he strolls the shores of the universe, does he look down with sadness, pity or disgust at our brokenness? When the world spits us out and we wash up at His feet, does He accept us in our imperfect state? The bible explains that not only does God accept us, but He walks along the perimeter of our existence.. waiting for us!  When we are finally done splashing around on our own and reach out to Him, He will pick us up, wipe us off, and add us to His precious collection of others He has saved…

All we have to do is ask.

Ephesians 2:8- For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is a gift of God.
